The Department of Veterinary Medicine and Animal Production (DMVPA) at the University of Napoli Federico II (UNINA) performs activities and research projects in the field of animal sciences. The final goal of the research activity is to promote innovations in the healthcare system and also in the production process of livestock farms.
Two Units of the Department will be involved in the LIFE proposal MiCliFeed, namely the Unit of Parasitology and Parasitic Diseases and the Unit of Animal Nutrition that have strong collaboration in teaching and research activities.
The Unit of Parasitology and Parasitic Diseases at the DMVPA (Prof. Laura Rinaldi, Prof. Giuseppe Cringoli and Dr. Antonio Bosco) has a focus on research on epidemiology, diagnosis, and control of helminth infections in livestock. Further areas include: a) geographical information system approach applied to epidemiology of parasitic infections in small and large ruminants; b) parasite epidemiology in ruminant farms and impact of livestock helminths on animal health, welfare and productivity; c) innovative sustainable control methods for helminth parasites of livestock.
The research lines of the Unit of Animal Nutrition at the DMVPA (Prof. Serena Calabrò and Prof. Monica Cutrignelli) have been aimed to evaluate the chemical-nutritional characteristics, using in vivo and in vitro methods, of feedstuffs used to formulating feeding plans for livestock animals, with particular reference to ruminants from milk and meat production. In particular, in collaboration with other national and international researchers, the research activity is aimed to improving the nutritional characteristics (especially in terms of fatty acid profile) of milk and derivatives products and meat. More recently, in order to try to limit the environmental impact of livestock, the investigations concern the characterization of local agricultural and industrial by-products and the in vitro evaluation of methane production.

Laura Rinaldi is Full Professor of Parasitology and Parasitic Diseases at the Department of Veterinary Medicine and Animal Production, University of Naples Federico II. In 2014, she obtained a PhD in Veterinary Science at Ghent University, Belgium. She’s scientific responsible of research unit of several projects of national and international importance.
Since 2020, she’s Director WHO Collaborating Centre for Diagnosis of Intestinal Helminths and Protozoa. The main research topics of Laura Rinaldi are focusing on epidemiology (using geospatial tools), diagnosis (using traditional and innovative techniques) and control (including anthelmintic resistance) of helminths and other parasites of veterinary and medical interest. The scientific production in parasitology consists of more than 600 publications: papers published on national and international scientific journals, proceedings of national and international conferences, chapters of text books. She has significant managerial experience in research projects.
Bio
Monica Isabella Cutrignelli DVM, PhD in Animal Production Sciences, is Full Professor of Animal Nutrition at the Department of Veterinary Medicine and Animal Production (DMVPA), University of Napoli Federico II. The research topics dealt with concern the nutritional evaluation of feedstuffs, the effects of diet on the quantitative and qualitative characteristics of animal products, the use of by- and co-products in animal nutrition and the dietary effects of some nutritional treatments for pets. The scientific production is evidenced by 87 publications in indexed journals, congress papers, book chapters and reviews (HI 20, total citation 1148).
She has held several courses related to Animal Nutrition disciplines within the degree courses of the DMVPA and post-degree at the School of Specialization in Animal Nutrition, Pathophysiology of reproduction; Ethology applied to animal welfare. In 2018, she was indicated as coordinator of the Study Committee on “Pet Breeding and Nutrition” of the ASPA Association.
She has collaborated with researchers belonging to several foreign institutions (Brazil, France, Benin, Germany).

Serena Calabrò, DVM, PhD in Animal Production Sciences, is Associate Professor in Animal Nutrition at the Department of Veterinary Medicine and Animal Production, University of Naples Federico II, Italy.
Research activity regards the nutritional evaluation of ruminant feedstuffs and the effects of nutrition on milk and meat production Author of 90 indexed publications (h index: 21; total citations: 1157). She participates in national and international research project.
The teaching activity is focused on Animal nutrition issue for bachelor’s and master’s degree students in Animal Production and Veterinary Science as well as graduated and doctoral students in Veterinary Science. As management activities, she is member of the Erasmus Commission and promoter of student exchanges with Lugo and Bucharest University.
She is the coordinator of the 3-yrs bachelor’s degree course in Animal Production; she is in the board of the School of Agriculture and Veterinary.

Antonio Bosco is Researcher in Parasitology and Parasitic Diseases at the Department of Veterinary Medicine and Animal Production, from the University of Naples Federico II. In 2014 he obtained a PhD degree in Biology, Pathology and Environmental Hygiene in Veterinary Medicine at the University of Naples Federico II.
He’s a member of research units in several national and international scientific projects. The main scientific interests of his research concern epidemiology, diagnosis (using traditional and innovative techniques) and control of protozoa, helminths and arthropods of veterinary and human interest.
His scientific production consists of 170 works published in national and international scientific journals or presented at national/international scientific congresses. H-index:14 (Scopus).
Bio
Alessandro Vastolo is PhD in Veterinary Sciences. He has achieved a master’s in Animal Science and doctoral degree at Department of Veterinary Medicine and Animal Production, University of Naples, Federico II, on the field of Animal Nutrition. The title of PhD project was “Strategies for the use of residues from agro-industrial processing in animal feed”.
The research activity carried out mainly concerns the nutritional evaluation of zootechnical foods using in vitro techniques and in vivo studies; the use of by-products of agro-industrial processing in animal feed.

She’s an Environmental Engineer graduated from University of Naples Federico II, specialized in database management, mapping and modelling by the use of Geographic Information Systems (GIS).
She collaborates with the Department of Veterinary Medicine and Animal Production (University of Naples Federico II) since 2020, participating in several national and international research projects. Currently, she’s enrolled at the first year of PhD in Veterinary Science at the University of Naples Federico II.
Her research focuses on the combined use of geospatial technology and innovative devices to support parasite control strategies.

Dieu Donné Kiatti is PhD student in Veterinary Science at the Department of Veterinary Medicine and Animal Production, University of Naples, Federico II.
He graduated in Animal Production at Universite D’abomey-Calavi (Uac), Republic of Benin. Research topics regards the nutritional evaluation of ruminant feedstuffs and the effects of diet on the quantitative and qualitative characteristics of animal products using in vitro techniques.
